OPEN provide a variety of training sessions with youth groups, youth group staff, and volunteers.

Please be aware that all the training provided is done in line with harm reduction methodology, and is focused on raising awareness. All of the training utilises interactive and group based activities to maximise participants learning.

  • Drugs awareness (2hr)

    Key Messages:

    By completing this training particiapants will be able to:

    • identify a variety of drugs names
    • understand the categories of drugs
    • understand the law around the drugs
    • understand the short and long term effects of drugs
    • identify harm reduction methods that could be used for a variety of drugs
  • Alcohol Awareness (2hr)

    Key Messages:

    By completing this training particiapants will be able to:

    • identify the types of alcohol
    • understand the impact of Foetal Alcohol Harm
    • understand the short and long term effects of alcohol
    • understand harm reduction methods for alcohol
  • Sexual Health (2hr)

    Key Messages:

    By completing this training particiapants will be able to:

    • be familiar with sexual language and its significance and know what language is appropriate for discussing sexual issues in a variety of settings
    • understand the anatomy of male and female genitalia
    • be aware of the risk of transmitting Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI's)
    • know what types of contraceptions are available and their pro's and con's
    • understand the contraction, symptoms and treatment of common STI's
    • understand where in shetland to get support for Sexual Health
  • Positive Relationships (1hr)

    Key Messages:

    By completing this training particiapants will be able to:

    • understand the qualities and characteristics that are valuable to them
    • understand the core values that are important in their relationships (friendship, romantic, family)
    • understand what is acceptable and unacceptable in a relationship
    • practice thinking about how they would support a friend in an unhealthy relationship
  • Grooming (1hr)

    Key Messages:

    By completing this training particiapants will be able to:

    • explain what "grooming" means
    • identify the signs of grooming and understand how you can help in this situation
    • know where to signpost to for support
    • understand how and where grooming can happen
    • understand how young people can keep themselves safe
  • LGBTQ+ Awareness (2hrs)

    Key Messages:

    By completing this training particiapants will be able to:

    • identify and understand common LGBTQ+ terms and identities
    • understand the differences between Biological Sex, Gender Identity, Gender Expression, and Sexualities
    • understand transgender terminology and the appropriate use of pronouns
  • Key skills in Leadership and Youth Governance (1 day)

    Key Messages:

    By completing this training particiapants will be able to:

    • understand the Goleman's styles of leadership
    • understand their natural leadership style
    • understand the difference between passive, assertive and aggressive
    • understand the different types of power everyone has and how they can be used effectively
    • understand how destructive hidden agendas can be and how to overcome this
    • understand Groupthink and how to avoid it
